The Reproductive System
The human reproductive system contains the organs that make it possible for humans to reproduce. Females and males contain their own, different, reproductive systems. A brief description of both are given below. Links containing additional information are also listed.
The Female Reproductive System--The human female pelvis forms a bowl-shaped cavity that helps support the weight of a developing fetus and encloses the organs of the female reproductive system. The female reproductive system contains two ovaries which produce mature eggs. Leading away from the ovaries are the fallopian tubes. This is the site of fertilization. The uterus is the place where the fetus develops. The uterus is an expandable organ which makes it a perfect place for a developing fetus. The vagina is the opening of the female reproductive system where a baby will leave the body. It is also known as the birth canal. External anatomy in the female reproductive system consists of a small erectile organ called the clitoris and two sets of skin folds. The labia minora is the innermost skin fold and the labia majora is the outermost.
The Male Reproductive System--The reproductive anatomy of the male is mostly external. The testes, the male gonads, hang in a sac of skin called the scrotum. The testes produce sperm, which cannot survive long at body temperature, so they must be stored outside the male body. The penis is also located outside the male body. This is the erectile organ responsible both for the release of urine and for the transfer of sperm to the vagina of the female. The seminal vesicle is one male organ which is inside the male body. This organ is responsible for producing semen, the substance that sperm travel in.
Below are a list of WWW sites that may provide more information about the male and female reproductive systems.
